About Us

Our Story, Slowly Told

Before it was a café, it was a single filter coffee counter and a family who believed breakfast was worth doing properly. Here's the fuller version of how that became Madras Mandir.

How It Began

One Counter, One Family, One Standard

Madras Mandir began decades ago as a single filter coffee counter in the by-lanes of Mylapore, steps from the temple tank — a spot where the aroma of roasted chicory met the quiet ritual of a temple town's morning. There was no menu to speak of, just a handful of tiffin items made the way they'd always been made, and a coffee blend nobody outside the family knew.

What began as a neighbourhood habit slowly became a destination, then a small dining room, then the café you can visit today — but the counter never really changed shape. We grew the space around it, not away from it.

Three generations later, that same unhurried care shapes every dosa, every tumbler of coffee, every leaf we serve on. Nothing here is inherited by accident — every detail was a deliberate choice to keep something worth keeping.

Our Heritage

What We've Carried Forward

Four things that haven't changed since the first counter, and won't.

  • Three Generations Strong

It started with one filter coffee counter in a Mylapore by-lane, run by a grandmother who believed a good tumbler of coffee could hold a neighbourhood together. Her son kept the counter after her, and now her grandchildren run the kitchen you're reading about — the same decoction, the same unhurried mornings, carried forward rather than reinvented.

  • A Recipe Book, Not a Menu

Nothing on our tables comes from a supplier's catalogue. Every batter, every chutney, every spice blend follows measurements our grandmothers taught by hand, in a kitchen rather than on paper — passed down, not written down, until we finally wrote it down ourselves so it would never be lost.

  • Rooted in Mylapore

We've never left the temple town we started in. The same streets, the same early risers on their way to the tank, the same bells — our café grew up around them, and we've built our mornings to feel like an extension of that walk rather than a destination apart from it.

  • Slow, On Purpose

Batters are ground fresh each morning, sambar simmers for hours, coffee is brewed by decoction rather than instant shortcuts. We've had decades to speed this up and chosen not to — the slowness is the point, not a limitation we've failed to solve.
